About The Author

Wick Welker

A robot yearns to remember. A thief struggles to forget. A galaxy on the verge of collapse.

On the fringe of a broken civilization, a robot awakens with no memories and only one directive: find his creator. But in the village of Korthe, Beetro finds only radioactive pestilence, famine, and Miree-a tormented thief with dreams of retiring after her final score. Meanwhile, the fiefdom is plunged further into chaos when a new warlord seizes control, recasting serfs as refugees and leaving derelict robot peasants in his wake. With a shared interest in survival, Beetro and Miree team up to pull off an impossible castle heist: steal a single flake of dark matter, the world’s most valuable and mysterious ore.

But as they trek through the feudal wasteland in search of answers, they realize the true extent of the chaos surrounding them: the stars are disappearing from the sky and the entire galaxy is unraveling. As he uncovers his origin, Beetro discovers he may be the key to the salvation of the cosmos-or its destruction. Time, space, and loyalty become relative as he learns the real reason he was created.

A mind-bending science fiction epic with the bones of a fantasy traveling quest, Dark Theory unfolds through a journey of betrayal, identity, and unlikely friendships in a world of darkness set at the edge of space and time.

Five stars for Silverstones. It’s a great indie shop!
Four stars for Dark Theory. An intriguing premise, with high stakes that kept me invested in the characters. The prose wasn’t the best but passable for an action filled scifi.

I do not even know where to begin. I wish I had an amazing vocabulary and could eloquently express how good this book really is. Unfortunately, I’m just a country bumpkin from Tennessee, so I’ll try my best.

I’m sure all readers have that one moment and book that forever changed their life. When I was a kid in Junior High (I’m 38 now so it was a bit ago), I read Stephen King’s The Stand. That book left a profound mark on my life. Then, as recently as a few years ago, I discovered and read Brandon Sanderson’s The Way of Kings and that book had a huge impact as well. I claim that it changed my life. The Way of Kings showed me that there is so much more to books than just the story. Journey before Destination, right?

Both the books I just mentioned showed me that not only could books be incredible stories but that they could have a ton of heart, make you emotional, and create new best friends for life even though these new friends aren’t real. They were so much more than just a book. The feeling I had when I finished The Way of Kings is the same exact feeling I got after finishing Dark Theory. In short, this masterpiece is my favorite book… EVER!

“Technology is so poor these days, tyrants can only use the weapons of the past-weapons they dig up-combustible engines that they patch back together. Mankind has proven that they cannot wisely wield the technology they develop and that’s the era in which we now live. May as well be the stone ages.”

Make no mistake, Wick Welker’s Dark Theory is hard science fiction. Emphasis on the mention of hard. But don’t worry. It never makes you feel stupid. As I said, I’m a redneck from Tennessee and this was an enjoyable and maybe even an easy read. But it’s not just sci-fi. It’s a blend of many genres but mostly it’s sci-fi mixed with the fantasy genre.

I don’t want to get to in deep with the story because it’s best if you go in blind and discover the world, the characters, and the stories for yourself. Just know that this is about the world coming to an end. In fact, the whole galaxy is in trouble. In the Earth’s night sky, there is only the moon and five planets. No stars.

Our main characters are Beetro, a self-aware robot who suddenly awakens and the only thing he knows is that he needs to find Galiaro. Who or what that is, no one knows. Miree, a miserable female thief who is probably the least trusting person in the galaxy and who leaves angry mobs in her wake wherever she goes, discovers Beetro and thus begins our journey and story.

Needless to say, their journey encounters different characters and adventures. What stood out to me the most is that these characters acted in real ways. These people react to the world around them in natural ways that never felt fake. That doesn’t mean you might like all their choices and the way they act and react but it all felt natural. These are real living, breathing, thinking individuals.

As a said, this is a sci-fi tale of the end of the world but make no mistake, there is heart all in this book. Honestly, I think that what this story is real trying to convey is mankind and identity, who they are and what they are capable of, and of friends and friendships. Does what we do in the past, or even in the future, determine who we really are right now? Can we really change, when everything in the world and galaxy around us is falling apart and has determined our lives for us?

“What makes a person who they are? Is it their thoughts? Actions? What they would’ve done? Don’t be afraid of who you were. Be afraid of never learning enough to change for the better.”

As I said, I thought the book was easy to read. I really enjoyed the prose and the story speeds along, never once slowing down. I honestly can’t recall the story ever being dragged down once. There are no endless descriptions of clothes and what not. Wick tells exactly the story he wants to tell and doesn’t waste anyone’s time telling it.

The book is thick (that’s how I like ’em) and I plowed through it as fast as I could. Note, I do work for a living and also help take care of my Granny, so I don’t have all the free time in the world. I couldn’t wait to finish the story but at the same time I did not want it to end. In fact, if I have any complaints, it would be that book isn’t long enough and that it does in fact end. But boy, those endings! I need the sequels now! The dust jacket cover art is great and there are also a few small illustrations sprinkled throughout that I absolutely adored. Also, the font was just a very easy and enjoyable fond to read.

Even after finishing this book, my mind constantly goes back to the story and the characters. It made that much of a mark on me. I laughed, I cried, and I cared. I loved EVERYTHING about Dark Theory. This is without a doubt the Book of the Year and my favorite book of all time. I may have just found a new favorite author.
